Fall into Color!

Color is everywhere this season!  There are many options available so that you can incorporate these bold colors into your everyday style.  Knowing what options are available will help you decide what is going to work for your lifestyle.

If you are looking for a permanent color change, talk to your hair stylist about what options are available to you.  You want to call your stylist ahead of time to consult with them about what color you want to add and where.  Your stylist can guide you in the right direction and help answer questions.  In some cases, your stylist may need to add additional time to your service in order to prepare your hair for the brighter colors.  You also want to get educated as to the maintenance of the color.  This type of color can fade and will require additional visits to the salon to have that color refreshed.  Another thing to consider with this option is that sometimes the color pigment can be hard to get out of your hair so you may be having to love your color for a while!

Looking for less commitment?!  Extensions are a great and inexpensive way to incorporate color!  You can find color extensions at most beauty supply stores such as Sally's.  You want to make sure that you are purchasing 100% human hair extensions.  This way you can curl and/or smooth your extensions as you like.  You will be disappointed if you get home and find out that your extensions have melted away when you style them with hot tools to blend in with your hair.  The extensions usually come in pairs.  Extensions allow you to wear as many colors as you like for as long as you like.

Chalking is a fun new way to add pops of color and is available in many different colors.  Chalking allows you to have control over where you want to use the color.  You can apply the chalk to any section of your hair after your hair is styled.  The most popular application is to add color to the tips of your hair.  Christina Aguilera  recently had this style during one of the episodes of The Voice.  Chalking lasts until you wash it out.  Super easy and super fun!

If you are unsure about this color trend, start out small by using extensions or chalking. Stay with color tones that blend with your hair color instead of contrasting.  For example, if you are a blonde, maybe select yellow instead of pink extensions.  Using extensions will allow you the most flexibility and no commitment as you can easily add or take out the extensions.

The Color Story

Ahhhh!  The weekend!  A time where you catch up on your television shows that you missed during the work week, run errands and head to the salon to get your hair colored and cut!  That is exactly what I did today!  I love it when I get fresh color!  The shine, the bounce and most importantly the brightness of newly colored hair.  I don't want this moment to end!  Unfortunately, after weeks of sun, shampoos, and maintenance, the beautiful shine dulls out.
Don't become a victim of dull hair!  There are several ways you can lock in that color and make it last!  For all my Blondie (or wanna be Blondie) friends, it is not so much locking in the color, rather keeping your hair's shine.  Paul Mitchell has a great new product, Forever Blonde.  This line offers shampoo, conditioner and a Dramatic Repair spray.  I was skeptical of this line at first as there are so many products out there that claim to protect and brighten my blonde strands.  Only leaving me feel disappointed and leaving them in my product graveyard!  The Forever Blonde shampoo and conditioner have kera-active protein for strength and protection and safflower oleosomes for moisture.  The conditioner is also loaded with macadamia nut oil to hydrate the hair and to restore it back to health!  This line also has Turmeric to help keep those blondes bright and beautiful!  The Dramatic Repair spray is a power house of kera-active protein, safflower oleosomes, and macadamia nut oil.  The Platinum shampoo that is offered with this line is violet so that it will help tone out those brassy blondes!  My hair was instantly transformed when I started using this line.  It is AMAZING! Another line that I like is Pureology.  They have a forever platinum blonde series that I have used on a regular basis (I like to change up my shampoos and conditioners).  Pureology is sulfate free and super conditioning!

For those of you with the rich browns and bright reds, keeping them rich and bright is a full time job!  It doesn't have to be this way!  I know that living in Colorado where we have greater sun exposure, fading is a huge problem.  Some ideas to help protect your color from direct sun would be the obvious solutions; where a hat and/or find shade under an umbrella!  If you are like me and hate wearing hats, then using a color protect spray will help.  Other ways you can help prevent fading is by using cool water when washing your hair.  Hot water can open the cuticle allowing the color molecules to escape.  Also by using a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner your color has a better chance of staying brighter!

There are other options that are available to all color treated hair that are offered as an in salon treatment.  The Kera-tri-plex treatment (again by Paul Mitchell) that consist of proteins, moisturizers, adds shine and seals your cuticle thus preventing the color molecules from getting washed out.  Additionally, you can get a clear coat shines color that you can add to your color service.  This helps seal down the cuticle while adding tremendous shine.

Please let me know if you have any at home remedies that you use to prevent color fade.  I would love to read them!

The Basics

Bad hair day?  Look no further than your shower!  The shampoo and conditioner that you use accounts for 80% of a good hair day or a bad one!  Wow!  What can you do to improve your odds? Who knows your hair just as well as you do?  Consult your hair stylist!  This is what we do for a living.  We see hundreds of clients with all different shapes and hair textures.  As a hair stylist, I want my clients to love your hair and feel confident that you, as my client, can recreate the same hair style at home.  If my name is on your hair, I want it to look amazing!

Consider your salon to be a library filled with information to suit your hair needs.  You need to learn your hair type.  Is your hair curly?  Then you most likely suffer from frizz and dryness.  If this is the case, than you want to find a shampoo and conditioner that will help moisturize and smooth your locks!  If you are like me, and have fine, color treated hair.  I need a shampoo that offers lots of moisture and protein!

Paul Mitchell has a phenomenal line of products that are color coded as a guide to keep you in the right hair care direction!
If you are currently using a professional shampoo and conditioner and experiencing the "Bad Hair Day Blues", then you need to change things up!  You could be using the wrong shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.  Don't be married to your products!  Your best hair days are closer than you think! Come in to see me Saturday at Salon Foushee!

The Beginning

Hello!
My inspiration for this blog began about a year ago.  I had a client in my chair who was like so many women that I have seen before, who do not know what shampoo and conditioner to use, what styling products are or how to use them correctly.  This client had very good intentions in wanting to keep her hair healthy but was never satisfied.  The problem?  Like so many others, she spends hundreds of dollars on her hair to get it colored and cut every 6 to 8 weeks, then travels to a drug store and spends just a few dollars for at home hair care.  This always frustrates me (and I am sure your hair stylist)! If you are spending so much money to go to the salon why do you not spend a little bit more to have great quality at home hair care?  I educate my clients to think of professional products as insurance for your hair!
Have you felt this way?  You leave the salon looking and feeling amazing, wake up the next morning to wash and style your hair and are bummed that your hair has lost its bounce and shine that you had the day before?  Throw out that drug store shampoo and conditioner!  Get rid of the styling products that those marketing companies seduced you into buying so you too can look like Eva Longoria!  It is not going to happen!  You will end up spending less money purchasing professional salon products than you will buying from any drugstore in more ways than one.  What those clever commercials are not telling you is that many of those products are watered down and lack the key nutrients and moisturizers that you so desperately need!

I hope to cover many salon and product questions in my future blogs!  I hope you find it useful to you and your quest to have the best hair ever!
